Auto Rickshaw Community Development
February 11, 2010
SocioEnviro, in association with Context India, has had weekly sessions with a large group of drivers from the Valmiki Nagar area of Bangalore. So far over 100 drivers have attended these sessions, leaders have been appointed amongst them and many have expressed their interest to avail of SocioEnviro’s services. We are creating groups of 5 drivers, much like the Self-Help Group Structure of Micro-Finance Institutions to enhance our control over drivers’ financial discipline. Also, our long term aim is empowerment of the auto-rickshaw driver community in every sense. This is where developing a powerful, independent and progressive-minded community – albeit a time-taking process – plays a stellar role.

Hi, a good concise capture of events… just a few edit suggestions - the community development is not to “control” the drivers, but to make them owners of the process of development… because in my view control takes away the true meaning of community development bottom up process….

Hi,
I came across your venture while researching for my own social development project in the same area. And I was pleasantly surprised to see an organization already interested in bringing the change that I am thinking about in the exact same areas.
I would like to get in touch with you to discuss this in greater detail. Do let me know how to.
Regards,
Giri
